Lately, most research on sustainable design from the perspective of emotional sustainability focuses on product design, especially exploring how product functionality dictates consumers’ emotional changes after using the product, but ignores the significant influence of consumers’ visual impressions on the product’s judgment. Therefore, the aim of this paper is how visual communication design can maintain an emotionally sustainable connection between the consumer and the product to prolong the product’s service life and reduce resource wastage and cost. Based on a literature review of sustainable design, visual communication design and emotionally sustainable design, this paper first adopted a case study approach to analyze more than 85 high-quality design practice cases and put forward basic design strategies. Behavior research methodology was then applied to analyze the consumer behavior involved in the initial design strategies and those design strategies were upgraded according to the results of the analysis. Based on the above analysis and research work, this paper proposes six design strategies to improve the emotional sustainability of visual communication design, namely, enjoyment, functionality, description, symbolism, interaction and innovation. In terms of sustainability, the design strategies proposed in this paper provide a new design mode for emotionally sustainable visual communication design and make products more acceptable to consumers and long-term retention. Emotionally sustainable visual communication design can influence consumers’ aesthetics and lead consumer behavior toward more sustainable use of products.

People may discard items that may still function for various reasons, but only a few people think that the service life of these discarded items should be prolonged [1, 2, 3]. According to past data analysis, the life of discarded items was about two-thirds of their reasonable service life. Especially for small electrical appliances, their service life was about five years less than their reasonable life [3]. From a sustainability perspective, such a high product turnover rate should be discouraged as it will result in wastage and consume more resources [4]. Even if these discarded items are made from degradable or renewable materials, additional environmental pollution and waste cannot be avoided. In conclusion from past research, it was found that most people frequently replace their innovative products such as cell phones and electrical appliances [3], since the decorative features of these products change every year [5] (p. 86). From a design perspective, these incidents can be attributed to the negligence of some designers as they were not keenly aware of these sustainability issues. To overcome these problems, scholars and designers tried to find possible and feasible measures to increase product life, both theoretically and practically.
The concept of sustainable development originated from a report titled “Our Common Future” published by the World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987. In the report it was defined that “sustainable development” should ensure that it meets the needs of the present. compromising
